A
fabulous exponent of all the skills necessary to dominate Australian
football for almost a decade, Gaz was a player who had the capacity to
thrill the fans more than any player - bar none! Referred
to as Superman, and God, Gazza was quicker, a better kick (with both
feet), a better mark (one or two hands), a higher leaper, stronger and
the best fighter of anyone to have pulled on the boots - forget the
others. With
the great strength of his shoulders, arms and legs, Ablett could stand
his ground with any opponent.
He kicked 1,030 goals during
his career - quite a feat considering he started out on a wing.
He won the
Geelong best in fairest in 1984, his first year with the Cats.
He made
seven All Australian sides.
He won the Coleman Medal (leading
goal kicker)
three times - 1993, '94 and '95 He
also topped the Geelong goal-kicking in 1985, '86 and '88.
He won the Norm Smith Medal (best in grand final) in 1989.
Named in the
AFL Team of the Century. In
that Grand Final record he equalled Dermot Brereton's nine goal record
for a premiership play-off. Gaz kicked nine goals one with the behind, a
great snap on the turn, hitting the post. He
took several marks in that game which could have been awarded mark of
the day (including one in the first two seconds) and kicked a goal from
a throw in which was simply freakish.
Below are
some stats from some great seasons for Gazza toward the end of his career.
