Came
to Geelong from East Perth where he was West Australian champion
in 1977.
He consistently
beat bigger and faster players with his strong close-checking
game and great anticipation.
Regularly
controlled the great full-forwards including Michael Roach and
Peter Hudson to small goal tallies.
Used his solid
frame to great effect in punching and marking schools.
Long torpedoes
were a highlight of Gary's play.
A teacher at St
Mary's, Malarkey was a very popular local identity.
Represented
both Victoria and W.A.
All-Australian
1979.
Played state
football - 1979 - 80 - 81.
Considered the
best full-back in the VFL in the early 1980's.
Third in Best and
Fairest in 1981 despite knee troubles.
